SYD (Shota Yamaguchi Designs) is a fine furniture making and design firm that specializes in individually producing furniture of the highest quality and design. Our mission is to create furniture with soul that begins with a story and keeps collecting memories.
Shota has been doing woodworking since he was 14. Right after high school, he left to England to study at the prestigious David Savage School of Fine Furniture where many of the leading furniture makers learned their craft. There, he learned the fine details of furniture making and learned to work with tight tolerances using hand tools to sneak up to the perfect fit.
After the time at David Savage’s School, he moved to Austin Texas where he worked for Collings Guitar, Michael Colca, and then finally for Mark Macek where he worked for 8 years. At Mark’s shop, he learned to fine tune his design sensibilities, learned unique furniture making techniques, and learned how to make furniture at a professional pace.
In 2013, Shota started SYD focusing on creating distinct pieces of furniture that is modern in aesthetic and crafted by hand, one piece at a time.
In 2016 he co-founded Toolmarks, a cooperative woodworking space in the heart of Austin.
Currently, he is working with other furniture makers to start a fine furniture making school in Austin.
